The Best Photography Stops

Forest Canyon Overlook (11,716 ft): Looking east into the deeply carved glacial canyon is one of the most dramatic viewpoints accessible by car in Colorado. The canyon drops over 2,500 feet and the scale is genuinely staggering. A wide-angle lens captures the full scope; a telephoto reveals the detail of the valley floor far below.

Alpine Visitor Center area (11,796 ft): The tundra walks from the visitor center provide intimate wildflower and tundra texture photography. The Never Summer Range is visible to the west from this elevation. Bighorn sheep and elk appear near this area regularly.

Lava Cliffs: Volcanic rock formations near the road's summit provide striking geological foreground against the sky. The dark volcanic material contrasts dramatically with the lighter granite peaks elsewhere in the park.

Lighting and Weather on Trail Ridge

Morning is the superior photography window on Trail Ridge Road. By early afternoon, cumulus clouds are typically building over the peaks and by 2 PM, thunderstorms are possible. Dramatic storm light during the brief window between cloud build and storm can produce extraordinary images — but get to lower elevation before the storm arrives.

The open tundra at Trail Ridge offers no shelter from lightning. If you hear thunder or see anvil clouds developing over the peaks, descend immediately. No photograph is worth the risk.

Approach from Grand Lake

From Grand Lake, Trail Ridge Road begins its ascent approximately 5 minutes after entering RMNP from the west entrance. The drive from the park entrance to the Alpine Visitor Center takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes with photography stops. Allow a full morning for the round trip.

Bring layers — the temperature at 12,000 feet is typically 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Grand Lake village. Wind makes the effective temperature even lower. A warm jacket, gloves, and a hat are worthwhile even in July.
