Blue Hour Cabin Exteriors
The most compelling cabin exterior images are captured at blue hour — the 20 to 40 minutes after sunset when the sky holds a deep cobalt blue and the cabin interior light (warm tungsten) balances with the ambient exterior light. At this moment, the cabin glows invitingly against the darkening mountain backdrop without the sky being completely black.
Set up outside the cabin angled to show both the lit interior through windows and the sky/mountain backdrop. A tripod is necessary for the 2 to 10 second exposures required at blue hour. The hot tub steam in winter adds atmosphere to exterior shots.
Hot Tub and Deck Photography
A night hot tub shot with mountain darkness and stars above is the archetypal cabin photography image. Steam from the water creates atmosphere; the illuminated water surface provides a natural subject focus. In winter, snow on the surrounding deck edges and railing adds context.
For deck lake-view photographs, the best light is within the first 15 minutes after sunrise — the lake below is illuminated by first light and the sky is still colorful. Use the deck railing as a foreground compositional element leading the eye toward the lake and mountains.
Interior Photography
Cabin interiors photograph best with a mixture of natural and artificial light. Open curtains or blinds to admit window light as a key source, then supplement with room lamps for warmth. Avoid overhead fluorescent or LED lights that create flat, colorless results.
