The Temperature Argument
For most Phoenix groups the reason is straightforward: Grand Lake sits at 8,369 feet and does not do triple digits. A July afternoon here is a different climate rather than a milder version of the same one, which is why summer is the peak booking season from Arizona.
That also means July and August are the hardest weeks to secure. Several months of lead time is normal for those dates, particularly for a group tied to school holidays.
Airport to Cabin
The flight to Denver is short, and the drive from the airport to Grand Lake is roughly two hours — west on I-70, off at Empire, then US-40 north over Berthoud Pass through Winter Park and Granby.
Rental vehicle capacity is the usual snag for a large group with luggage. In winter, book 4WD or AWD and check cotrip.org before the pass rather than assuming the route is clear.
Water, in Quantity
Arizona groups are used to heat but not to altitude, and the two dehydrate differently. Coming from around 1,100 feet to 8,369 in a day, the first evening is usually quieter than planned.
Drink more water than feels reasonable, keep the first night light, and leave the hardest hike for day two. The hot tub at every property is the better first evening.
What Fills the Days
The western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is five minutes from every cabin and is the quieter of the park's two entrances. Grand Lake itself is Colorado's largest natural lake, with a marina running boat rentals and kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing available through the summer.
Grand Lake town has a boardwalk main street of shops and restaurants a short distance from the water.
