Kansas City to Grand Lake is approximately 8 hours by car via I-70 west through Denver and then US-40 north — a full road trip day but a manageable drive for a group sharing driving. Alternatively, nonstop flights from Kansas City to Denver run approximately 2 hours, with Grand Lake another 2 hours by rental car.

Breaking the Drive, or Not
I-70 runs almost the entire way, which makes this one of the more straightforward long drives to the Colorado mountains — one interstate, few decisions. Groups split roughly evenly between pushing through in a single day and stopping somewhere in western Kansas to arrive fresh.
Either way the last stretch is the one that changes character: off I-70 at Empire, north on US-40 over Berthoud Pass, then down through Winter Park and Granby. In winter that pass is maintained but does close for storms and avalanche control, so build in margin and check cotrip.org before the final leg.
Why Kansas City Groups Book a Week
A drive this long rarely justifies a weekend, so most groups from Missouri and Kansas take five to seven nights. That changes what matters about the property: more of the trip is spent in it, and the difference between a cabin that works for fourteen people over a week and one that merely sleeps them becomes obvious by day three.

Stocking the Kitchen
Groups arriving from out of state usually shop once on the way in rather than after settling. Granby, on the route about half an hour before Grand Lake, is the last town of any size before the cabins and is where most people stop.
With a full kitchen and a natural gas grill and smoker at the Lakeview Lodge and Lakeside Cabin, a week-long stay works out considerably cheaper than eating out twice a day for a party of fourteen — which for most groups is the point of taking a house rather than rooms.
What the Week Fills With
The western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is five minutes from every cabin, and it is the quieter of the park's two entrances by a wide margin. Beyond it, Grand Lake town has a boardwalk main street near the water, and the marina runs boat rentals in summer alongside kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing.
In winter the area turns to snowmobiling on the groomed trail network, with outfitters in town, plus snowshoeing and cross-country skiing from park trailheads.
Booking from Out of State
Summer weeks and the Christmas-to-New-Year period book earliest, and out-of-state groups tying a trip to school holidays are competing for exactly those dates. Several months of lead time is normal for July and August.
