Arapaho National Recreation Area
The Arapaho National Recreation Area encompasses the lakes and forests surrounding Grand Lake — including Shadow Mountain Lake, Lake Granby, and Meadow Creek Reservoir. The recreation area is managed by the US Forest Service and offers most of the same lake recreation as RMNP without the entry fee.
The recreation area provides the public access infrastructure for the Grand County lakes — boat ramps, campgrounds, fishing access points, and trailheads. It's the backdrop to the Lakeside Cabin and Mid-Century Modern properties, which overlook Shadow Mountain Lake.
Activities in the Recreation Area
Boating, fishing, camping, and hiking are the primary activities in the Arapaho NRA. The Shadow Mountain Trail and Monarch Lake Loop both start within the recreation area. Fishing access to Shadow Mountain Lake and Lake Granby is managed under NRA regulations — a Colorado fishing license is required.
The recreation area connects seamlessly with Rocky Mountain National Park on the north and Indian Peaks Wilderness on the south, creating a massive combined public land area for outdoor recreation.
No Fee Required
One of the Arapaho NRA's practical advantages is the absence of an entry fee — unlike RMNP. Visitors who want to hike, fish, or explore the lakes without paying a park entry fee can do so throughout the recreation area.
The Shadow Mountain Dam area, accessible from Highway 34, provides views of both Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake simultaneously — a good starting point for understanding the area's geography.
