Shadow Mountain Trail
Shadow Mountain Trail climbs from the Shadow Mountain Dam area to a fire lookout with panoramic views across Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, and the surrounding Grand County landscape. The lookout sits at approximately 9,923 feet, with a view that encompasses both lakes, the town of Grand Lake, and the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park.
The trail is located in the Arapaho National Recreation Area — no RMNP entry fee required. It is one of the few trails near Grand Lake that provides significant elevation gain and lake views without entering the national park.
What to Expect
The trail climbs steadily through forest with some steeper sections before reaching the summit fire lookout. The views from the top justify every step of the climb — on a clear day, the panorama stretches from the Never Summer Range in the north to the Indian Peaks in the south, with both lakes glittering below.
Bring water and layers regardless of season. Start early in summer to avoid afternoon thunderstorms on the exposed summit. The trail can be muddy in spring and after rain.
From Grand Lake Cabins
The Shadow Mountain Trailhead is near the Shadow Mountain Dam, approximately 5 to 10 minutes from Grand Lake Cabins properties. The round trip takes 3 to 4 hours for most hikers at a comfortable pace.
This trail is an excellent option for a Grand Lake morning hike that doesn't require paying the park entry fee — the views are comparable to many RMNP hikes.
A Longer Climb Than It Looks
The Shadow Mountain Lookout is reached from the Grand Lake East Shore Trailhead at roughly 8,390 feet, accessed by bearing right at the Sombrero Stables as you drive into Grand Lake and turning right at the first street.
Published figures give around 4.8 miles each way — roughly 9.6 miles round trip — with about 1,533 feet of gain, rated moderate. It is a sustained climb rather than a stroll, and the mileage is the part most often underestimated.
The Lookout at the Top
The historic fire lookout tower at the summit is the destination, with views back over Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake below. Listings describe the trail as open year-round and used for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing depending on season.
That year-round access is unusual here — most of the longer routes in the area are effectively summer trails.
From the Lakeside Cabin and Mid-Mod
The East Shore Trailhead is on the Shadow Mountain side of Grand Lake, which puts it closest to the Lakeside Cabin and the Mid-Mod Cabin — both of which look out over the same water the trail climbs above.
For a nine-and-a-half-mile day, the full kitchen at each property is worth using the night before. Every cabin also has a private hot tub, which after 1,500 feet of climbing is the part of the day people remember.
