The CDT Through Rocky Mountain National Park

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail crosses Rocky Mountain National Park close to the Continental Divide, though the route through the park does not follow the Divide itself — the backbone of the Rockies that separates Atlantic and Pacific watersheds. The CDT through RMNP traverses above treeline terrain at 11,000 to 12,000+ feet, with access points on both the west (Grand Lake) and east (Estes Park) sides.

From the Grand Lake side, the CDT is most practically accessed via the Tonahutu Creek Trail or the North Inlet Trail, both of which connect to the high-country CDT corridor. Day hiking to CDT access points from Grand Lake typically involves 8 to 12+ mile round trips.

Day Hiking to the Divide

For day hikers wanting to reach the Continental Divide from Grand Lake, the Tonahutu Creek Trail offers the most straightforward route — climbing from the RMNP west entrance through Big Meadows and continuing to the Divide. Plan a full day and start early.

The views from the Continental Divide looking both east and west across Rocky Mountain National Park are extraordinary — a 360-degree panorama of the southern Rockies.

CDT Thru-Hiking Context

The Continental Divide Trail runs 3,100 miles from New Mexico to Montana. The RMNP section is one of the most scenic segments of the entire trail. Section hikers targeting the Colorado portion often plan their Grand Lake segment with a cabin stay on either end of a multi-day traverse.

Grand Lake Is a CDT Gateway Community

The Continental Divide Trail Coalition designates Grand Lake a Gateway Community, and states that the trail passes directly through the town rather than merely near it. For thru-hikers the town functions as a resupply point, with groceries, gear and food within walking distance.

The route through Rocky Mountain National Park is given as approximately 30 miles, with a loop between two trailheads measured at 28 miles, reaching elevations up to around 11,500 feet.

One Common Misconception

Despite the name, the Coalition is explicit that the route through the park does not travel the actual Continental Divide. It crosses high country and fragile alpine tundra close to it, which is a different thing and worth knowing before setting expectations.

That distinction also matters for conditions: alpine tundra is slow to recover from off-trail travel, and the section is exposed to weather that arrives faster than it does lower down.

Access Points From Town

The North Inlet and Tonahutu trailheads are reached via County Road 663 south of State Highway 278. The East Shore Trailhead is accessed via Shadow Mountain Drive, Lakeside Drive and Jericho Road.

All three are close to the cabins, which sit about five minutes from the park's western entrance. For a group where one or two people want a serious day on the CDT while the rest do something gentler, that proximity makes splitting the day straightforward rather than logistical.

Distances, elevation gain and difficulty above are drawn from published trail listings and are given as a guide. Published figures vary between sources, and trail conditions, closures and access change through the season.
