Ice Safety — Check Before You Go
Never go on lake ice without first checking current conditions from a local source. Ice thickness varies across the lake, changes daily with temperature, and can be dangerously thin even in the middle of winter near springs or areas of current. Grand Lake bait shops and local outfitters monitor ice conditions throughout the season — call them before your first outing.
The generally accepted minimum safe ice thicknesses: 4 inches for one person walking, 5 to 6 inches for a small group, and 8 to 12 inches for snowmobile access. Always carry ice picks around your neck (an easily reached self-rescue tool if you fall through) and never go on ice alone.
Target Species and Techniques
Lake trout (mackinaw) are the primary ice fishing target on Grand Lake. They are found in the deepest sections of the lake — typically 60 to 100+ feet of water — and are caught by jigging large spoons or live bait rigs near the bottom. Tip-ups set with live sucker minnows are effective for lake trout while you jig for other species.
Kokanee salmon (a landlocked chinook salmon) are also present in Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake. They are typically found at mid-depths (40 to 80 feet) and respond to small jigging spoons with attractors. Rainbow and brown trout may also be caught in shallower areas near shore.
Equipment Checklist
Ice auger (hand or power — power recommended for the depths required), ice rod and reel with light-to-medium action, tip-ups, jigging spoons and bait rigs, an ice scoop for clearing the hole, a sled for pulling equipment, insulated bibs and boots rated to at least -20°F, hand warmers, a small shelter or windbreak for extended sessions, and a Colorado fishing license.
