Colorado Fishing License Requirements

A valid Colorado fishing license is required for all anglers 16 years of age and older fishing any waters in the state, including Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, Lake Granby, and all waters inside Rocky Mountain National Park.

Licenses are available online at cpw.state.co.us and at licensed sporting goods retailers near Grand Lake. Options include daily, 5-day, annual, and combination hunting/fishing licenses. For a single cabin trip, a daily or 5-day license may be the most cost-effective option.

RMNP Fishing Regulations

Waters inside Rocky Mountain National Park have additional regulations beyond standard Colorado state fishing rules. The Colorado River inside RMNP is subject to special regulations including catch-and-release requirements in some sections. Check nps.gov/romo for current RMNP fishing regulations before fishing any park waters.

The general rule: Colorado state regulations apply everywhere, and RMNP regulations apply additionally inside the park. The more restrictive rule applies when they conflict.

Bag Limits and Size Restrictions

Bag limits (how many fish you can keep) and size restrictions vary by species and water body. Always check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations at cpw.state.co.us before fishing — regulations change annually and vary significantly between waters.

Lake trout (mackinaw) in Grand Lake have specific regulations that may differ from standard trout rules. Kokanee salmon have their own separate limit. Rainbow and brown trout limits apply at standard Colorado regulations unless a specific water body has special rules.

Verify current regulations online or call Colorado Parks and Wildlife Region 2 at (970) 725-6200 for Grand County-specific guidance.
