Shadow Mountain Lake โ Grand Lake's Sister Lake
Shadow Mountain Lake is connected to Grand Lake by a short channel, forming a shared body of water that defines the southern edge of the town. The lake is deep, cold, and surrounded by national forest on three sides, with Mt. Baldy rising to the east and the continental divide visible on clear days to the north. It is a significant piece of the Grand Lake landscape โ second in size and character only to Grand Lake itself.
The southern and western shores of Shadow Mountain Lake are lined with cabins and homes, many of them perched on the hillside above the water with commanding views down the lake toward the distant peaks. Two of the Grand Lake Cabins properties sit in this position โ elevated above the waterline with unobstructed views from every south-facing window and deck.
Lakeside Cabin โ New Log Construction Above the Lake
The Lakeside Cabin is brand new log construction, perched 30 feet above Shadow Mountain Lake on Lakeside Drive at 249 County Road 691. Five bedrooms, three bathrooms, sleeps 12. The panoramic view from the main living area encompasses the full length of Shadow Mountain Lake with Baldy Peak in the background โ a view that is, without qualification, exceptional at any time of year.
The deck wraps around the south and west faces of the cabin, capturing the full lake view with a fire pit, porch swing, and rocking chairs. Evening use of the deck with the hot tub and fire pit running simultaneously, overlooking the lake as the light drops behind the mountains, is the Lakeside Cabin's signature experience.
Inside: full kitchen, pool table game room, natural gas grill and smoker on the patio. The property is dog-friendly and is consistently rated 10/10 on Airbnb and VRBO across 119+ stays.
Mid-Century Modern โ 1972 Architecture, 2022 Remodel
The Mid-Century Modern cabin was built in 1972 and fully renovated in 2022 to its current condition. The architecture is authentic midcentury mountain โ clean lines, low profile, large windows, wood and stone materials. Three bedrooms plus a sleeping loft with two full pull-out sleepers, two bathrooms, sleeps 11.
The hot tub and outdoor patio look directly onto Shadow Mountain Lake with Mt. Baldy framed in the background โ one of the cleanest mountain-over-lake views in the Grand Lake area from a private property. The game room includes ping pong and foosball, and the propane grill is on the patio.
This is the most architecturally distinctive property in the collection. If the group appreciates design โ and specifically the midcentury design movement that was genuinely at home in Colorado mountain construction โ the Mid-Century Modern is the right choice. The interior is furnished to match the architecture rather than simply remodeling over it.
On the Water: Activities on Shadow Mountain Lake
Shadow Mountain Lake is primarily a motorized lake โ speedboats, fishing boats, and personal watercraft are common in summer. The lake is also used for fishing (rainbow trout and kokanee salmon are stocked), paddleboarding, and kayaking. Boat ramp access is available near the town of Grand Lake with nearby marina and rental services.
The connected channel to Grand Lake allows boaters to move between both lakes in a single outing. A motorboat rental from the Grand Lake marina can cover both lakes in a day โ crossing under the connecting bridge to reach Shadow Mountain, then circling back via the lake's open water.
In winter, both Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake freeze hard enough for ice fishing. The Lakeside Cabin neighborhood has some of the closest private-shoreline access to Shadow Mountain Lake in the area โ winter ice fishing from within walking distance of the cabin is a real possibility in a good freeze year.
How Shadow Mountain Lake Compares to Grand Lake
Grand Lake is Colorado's largest natural lake and gets the majority of visitor attention โ the historic boardwalk, the marina, and the town's main street are all on Grand Lake's north shore. Shadow Mountain Lake is quieter, less developed on its shoreline, and in many ways more scenic for the private-cabin experience precisely because it has not been commercialized to the same degree.
From the Shadow Mountain Lake properties, Grand Lake's boardwalk and restaurants are a short drive (under 5 minutes). The combination โ private lakefront setting with easy access to town amenities โ is the best of both for a multi-day stay. The cabins sit in the quiet while the action is available whenever the group wants it.
