May — Grand Lake Wakes Up
May is the beginning of Grand Lake's summer season, though it's still early enough that crowds are manageable and rates are below peak summer levels. The west-side trails inside Rocky Mountain National Park begin opening through May as snow clears at lower elevations. Adams Falls, the Colorado River Trail, and the East Inlet lower sections are typically accessible by mid-May.
Grand Lake Village begins reopening for the season — more restaurants and shops open their doors, and the marina starts preparing for summer boat rentals. The lake itself may still carry ice at the start of May, clearing fully by mid-month in most years.
Trail Ridge Road Opening
Trail Ridge Road — the highest continuous paved highway in the US — typically opens in late May, weather permitting. The opening varies year to year depending on snowpack; check nps.gov/romo for current road status. When Trail Ridge opens, it transforms a Grand Lake stay: the full 48-mile drive across the Continental Divide becomes accessible.
Memorial Day weekend (last weekend of May) is the official start of summer season at Grand Lake. Cabin availability tightens significantly over Memorial Day — book well in advance for that specific weekend.
May Hiking and Activities
Lower-elevation trails near Grand Lake are excellent in May — the spring green is vivid, wildflowers are appearing, and the trails aren't yet dusty from summer heat. Wildlife is active and visible before summer vegetation fills in the sight lines.
Fishing opens in May — Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake fishing can be productive in the cooler water temperatures. A Colorado fishing license is required for all anglers 16 and older.
