March in Grand Lake
March is a transitional month in Grand Lake — winter's grip begins loosening toward the end of the month, but early and mid-March typically still offer solid snowmobile conditions. The days are noticeably longer than January and February, giving more daylight for outdoor activities. Spring break travelers make the last two weeks of March busier than the rest of the month.
Late-season snowmobiling in early March can be excellent, though snow conditions become more variable as temperatures warm. Ice fishing season winds down in March as ice thickness decreases — check current conditions carefully before going out on the lake ice.
Spring Break in Grand Lake
The last two weeks of March coincide with most Colorado school spring breaks, bringing families to Grand Lake for ski and snowmobile trips. This is a popular but not overwhelming period — Grand Lake has enough space and trails to absorb spring break visitors without feeling crowded.
The Lakeside Cabin (sleeps 12) and Mid-Century Modern (sleeps 11) are popular for spring break family groups of 8 to 12. Lakeview Lodge and Pickleball Lodge (both sleeping 16) work for larger extended family groups.
What Comes After Winter
By late March, Grand Lake begins the slow thaw toward spring. RMNP's west-side trails are still snow-covered and suitable for snowshoeing. The town sees a quieter period before summer season begins in earnest. Shoulder-season rates in late March can be among the best of the year.
