The Shadow Mountain Dam
The Shadow Mountain Dam was completed in 1946 on the Colorado River south of Grand Lake, as part of the Colorado-Big Thompson water transfer project. The dam impounds the upper Colorado River to create Shadow Mountain Lake — a reservoir covering approximately 1,361 acres adjacent to and connected to Grand Lake.
The dam is a relatively modest concrete structure by Colorado reservoir standards, but its effect on the landscape was significant: it transformed a section of the upper Colorado River valley into one of the largest bodies of water in the area, fundamentally changing the recreation and scenic character of the Grand Lake shoreline.
How the System Works
Shadow Mountain Lake is connected to Grand Lake by the Shadow Mountain Canal — a short channel that allows water to flow between the two lakes. When water levels need adjustment, the dam controls the release into the Colorado River below.
From Shadow Mountain Lake, water can be pumped into Grand Lake and then into the Alva B. Adams Tunnel for transfer under the Continental Divide to the eastern slope. The system allows relatively precise water management between the two lakes and controls the levels of both.
This interconnected system is why Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake often appear to function as a single body of water — they are hydrologically connected and managed together.
The Dam Today
The Shadow Mountain Dam is visible from the recreation area near the southern end of Shadow Mountain Lake. A viewing area near the dam provides perspectives on both Shadow Mountain Lake and portions of Grand Lake simultaneously.
The dam is part of the active Colorado-Big Thompson water system managed by the Bureau of Reclamation — not a decommissioned historical structure, but an operating piece of western water infrastructure that continues its original function of transferring Colorado River water to the eastern slope.
