The Perfect Grand Lake Colorado Weekend

Two days at the western gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park — packed with alpine lakes, mountain trails, and the most scenic drives in Colorado.

Day 1: Arrive, Explore the Village, Hit the Lake

Arrive Friday evening and settle into your Grand Lake cabin. Stroll the historic boardwalk through Grand Lake Village — locally owned shops, galleries, and restaurants line the wooden walkway with lake views. Grab dinner at one of the town's independent restaurants and watch the sun drop behind the Continental Divide.

Saturday morning, rent a kayak or paddleboard on Grand Lake — Colorado's largest natural lake. The calm morning water reflects the surrounding peaks before afternoon wind picks up. In summer, the lake is full of sailboats, fishing boats, and wildlife. In winter, the same shores are blanketed in snow.

Day 2: Rocky Mountain National Park West

Drive five minutes to the RMNP west entrance and spend Sunday morning on the Colorado River Trail — a flat, beautiful walk along the headwaters of the Colorado River with frequent moose sightings. In summer, continue up Trail Ridge Road to the Alpine Visitor Center at 11,796 feet for panoramic views above treeline.

On your way out, stop at the Grand Lake Marina, explore the Shadow Mountain Dam overlook, or drive the short loop around Shadow Mountain Lake. The Grand Lake side of the park is consistently less crowded than the Estes Park entrance — you get the same stunning scenery with far fewer people.
