Fishing Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake
Grand Lake is Colorado's largest natural lake and one of its finest fishing destinations. The lake and adjacent Shadow Mountain Lake are connected by a short channel and offer similar fishing opportunities. Species include rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout, and kokanee salmon — the kokanee runs in late summer and early fall attract anglers from across the state.
The Grand Lake Marina offers boat rentals, guided fishing trips, and fishing tackle. Kayak fishing is popular in the calmer morning hours before afternoon winds pick up. Bank fishing is available at multiple access points around both lakes.
Ice Fishing in Winter
When Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake freeze in December, ice fishing season begins and often continues through February or early March. Lake trout — also called mackinaw — are the primary target for ice anglers and can reach impressive sizes in the deep, cold water of Grand Lake.
Ice fishing shelters (ice shanties) can be rented in Grand Lake, and many anglers set up tip-ups for lake trout while jigging for kokanee nearby. Always check ice thickness before venturing out — local bait shops monitor ice conditions and can advise on safe access areas.
Licenses and Regulations
A valid Colorado fishing license is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licenses are available online at cpw.state.co.us and at local sporting goods stores in Grand Lake. Daily, annual, and combination hunting/fishing licenses are available.
Bag limits and size restrictions vary by species and season. Check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife regulations before fishing, as rules can change. The Colorado River inside Rocky Mountain National Park has its own special regulations — check the NPS website for current RMNP fishing rules before fishing park waters.
