Wichita to Grand Lake
From Wichita, take I-135 to I-70 west — the route follows the famous coast-to-coast highway across Kansas and into Colorado. After Denver, US-40 north takes you through Winter Park and Granby to Grand Lake. The full drive is approximately 7 hours and provides a dramatic transition from flat Kansas plains to 8,369-foot mountain lake country.

One Interstate, Most of the Way
The route runs north to I-70 and then west across Kansas, which makes for a simple if long drive. Groups usually leave early and arrive in the evening, or break the journey once in eastern Colorado.
The last hour is the one that matters: off the interstate at Empire, north on US-40 over Berthoud Pass, then Winter Park, Fraser and Granby. That pass crosses the Continental Divide at around 11,300 feet and closes at times in winter for storms and avalanche control.
A Road Trip That Suits Families
This is a drive families make rather than fly, which usually means a wide age range in the group. The four properties were furnished with that in mind — real bedrooms rather than sofa beds counted as capacity, and living space that holds everyone at once.

The local rule worth knowing before arrival: Rocky Mountain National Park does not permit dogs on its trails, but the surrounding Arapaho National Recreation Area and national forest land is much more permissive. Most families alternate across the days rather than choosing one.
