Getting There from the Northwest
The flight to Denver is direct and frequent, and the drive from the airport to Grand Lake takes about two hours. Between them it is a half-day of travel — long enough that most Seattle groups book five nights or more rather than a long weekend.
The final stretch leaves I-70 at Empire for US-40 north over Berthoud Pass, crossing the Continental Divide before descending to Winter Park, Fraser and Granby.
A Drier Kind of Mountain
Pacific Northwest groups arrive with plenty of mountain experience but a different climate reference. The Colorado high country is dry rather than wet — the air, the trails and the snow all behave differently, and the sun at 8,369 feet is stronger than the temperature suggests.
Sunscreen matters more than expected, and hydration matters considerably more. The altitude is the adjustment rather than the terrain.

Summer opens Trail Ridge Road across the national park and the marina on the lake; winter brings snowmobiling on the groomed trail network and snowshoeing from park trailheads. Autumn is the quietest of the good months, with the aspen turning and the elk rut in the Kawuneeche Valley.
