Flying In and Driving Out
Denver International is the arrival point, and the drive to Grand Lake takes roughly two hours from there. Texas groups almost always need more vehicle than they first book — a party of fourteen with luggage does not fit into the two mid-size cars that seemed sufficient at reservation time.
The final approach leaves I-70 at Empire for US-40 north over Berthoud Pass. If the trip falls between November and April, book a 4WD or AWD vehicle rather than whatever is cheapest, and check cotrip.org before the last leg.
Escaping a Texas Summer
The most common reason Dallas groups make this trip is temperature. Grand Lake sits at 8,369 feet, and the difference between a July afternoon there and a July afternoon in North Texas is the entire point for a lot of families.
That also makes July and August the hardest weeks to book. Groups tied to school holidays are competing for exactly those dates, so several months of lead time is normal rather than cautious.

Altitude from Near Sea Level
Dallas sits a few hundred feet above sea level. Arriving at 8,369 feet the same day is a substantial jump, and the first evening is usually slower than the itinerary assumed.
Drink far more water than feels necessary, keep the first night's drinking light, and put the demanding hike on day two. Every cabin has a private hot tub, which is a more realistic first evening than a trailhead.
