Planning the Trip from the Springs
Colorado Springs is the longest of the major Front Range drives to Grand Lake, which shapes how groups use it. A single overnight rarely justifies the round trip; three nights or more is the common pattern, often built around a holiday weekend when there is an extra day to absorb the travel.
The route runs north to the Denver metro and then west on I-70, leaving the interstate at Empire for US-40 north over Berthoud Pass. In winter the pass is maintained but can close during storms, so check cotrip.org before setting out and allow more time than the map suggests.
