A Short Flight and a Scenic Drive
The flight to Denver is a common nonstop, and the drive from the airport to Grand Lake takes roughly two hours. That combination makes Colorado unusually reachable for a Midwestern group compared with mountain destinations further west.
The road leaves I-70 at Empire and climbs US-40 north over Berthoud Pass, crossing the Continental Divide at around 11,300 feet before descending to Winter Park, Fraser and Granby.
Winter Is a Real Season Here
Chicago groups are not deterred by cold, which opens up the half of the year that many visitors skip. Grand Lake in winter is a snowmobiling destination with an extensive network of groomed trails and rental outfitters in town, plus snowshoeing and cross-country skiing from the national park trailheads.

The Lakeview Lodge sleeps 16 and is the view property, with eight-foot windows over two lakes and Mt. Baldy, a billiard loft and an 86-inch TV game room. The Pickleball Lodge sleeps 16 and is the active one.
The Lakeside Cabin sleeps 12 above Shadow Mountain Lake with a deck fire pit and porch swing; its driveway is steep, so winter arrivals want 4WD. The Mid-Mod Cabin sleeps 11 in a 1972 house fully remodelled in 2022.
Practicalities for Flying In
Book more rental vehicle than the passenger count suggests, particularly with winter gear. Stop for groceries on the way up rather than after arriving; Granby is the last town of any size before the cabins.
