What Each Does Best
Winter Park Resort is one of Colorado's premier ski mountains — over 3,000 skiable acres and significant vertical drop (check winterparkresort.com for current figures). If skiing is the primary goal, Winter Park is the ski area you want.
Grand Lake is the better base for non-ski activities: Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake itself (kayaking, fishing, sailing in summer; ice fishing in winter), and 300+ miles of snowmobile trails. Grand Lake Village's authentic character is also a significant draw compared to Winter Park's resort-town development.
Combining Both on One Trip
At 30 to 45 minutes apart, Grand Lake and Winter Park are close enough to use Grand Lake as your base for skiing at Winter Park. Stay in a Grand Lake Cabins property for the cabin experience, hot tub, and game room — and drive 30 minutes to ski at Winter Park when that's on the day's agenda.
This is the setup for groups with mixed interests: some members ski every day while others snowmobile or explore RMNP, and everyone meets back at the Grand Lake cabin for dinner. The cabin hot tub at the end of a ski or sled day is the perfect finish.
Cost Comparison

These two are close enough that the comparison is genuinely practical rather than theoretical — a group can stay in one and spend a day in the other. Winter Park is built around lift-served skiing; Grand Lake is built around a lake and a national park boundary.
A group whose trip is entirely skiing should stay south. A group wanting a ski day among several other kinds of day usually finds Grand Lake the better base.
What Basing in Grand Lake Adds
The park's western entrance is five minutes from the cabins, and the area has its own winter identity — a groomed snowmobile trail network with outfitters in town, plus snowshoeing and cross-country skiing from park trailheads.
In summer the difference widens further, since the lake and the marina have no equivalent in a ski town once the snow has gone.
The Return at the End of the Day
Coming back to a whole cabin rather than a room at a resort base is the part groups mention afterwards. Every property has a private hot tub, a dedicated game room and a full kitchen.
