Different Parts of Colorado
Durango and Grand Lake sit in different mountain ranges, different regions of Colorado, and offer different landscape experiences. Opposite Corners of Colorado
Durango sits in the southwest with a distinct regional character and its own set of attractions. Grand Lake is in the north, against the Rocky Mountain National Park boundary, roughly two hours from Denver International.
For most groups the deciding factor is which part of the state the rest of the trip is in, since these two are a long way apart rather than alternatives on the same route.
What Grand Lake Is For
The combination here is specific: Colorado's largest natural lake, a national park entrance five minutes from the cabins, and a town small enough that the main street is a boardwalk.
Summer is the lake and the park, including Trail Ridge Road once it opens. Winter is snowmobiling on the groomed trail network and snowshoeing from park trailheads.
