The Kauffman House

The Kauffman House is a two-story log structure built in 1892 by Ezra Kauffman, an early Grand Lake entrepreneur. The building is one of the best-preserved examples of Colorado mountain resort architecture from the Victorian era and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It now operates as a museum managed by the Grand Lake Area Historical Society.

The museum preserves artifacts, photographs, and furnishings related to Grand Lake's history from its earliest settlement through the early 20th century. Exhibits cover the town's development, the surrounding ranching and mining industries, and the role of tourism — which began here remarkably early for a remote mountain community.

Visiting the Museum

The Kauffman House is located on the Grand Lake boardwalk — walking distance from all Grand Lake Village restaurants and shops. Hours and admission fees vary by season; check with the Grand Lake Area Historical Society for current visiting information.

The building itself is as interesting as the exhibits it houses — the construction techniques, material sourcing, and layout reflect the practical ingenuity of late 19th-century Colorado mountain building.

Grand Lake History Context

Grand Lake's founding era was defined by competing interests — ranchers, miners, fishermen, and early resort developers all recognized the exceptional value of the location. The town's history includes a period of political violence in the 1880s that has been called the 'Grand Lake War' — a conflict among county officials that resulted in multiple deaths on one July day in 1883.

The Kauffman House survived those turbulent early years and now stands as one of the most tangible connections to Grand Lake's origins.
