The Highest NPS Visitor Facility

The Alpine Visitor Center, located at 11,796 feet on Trail Ridge Road, is the highest visitor center in the entire National Park System. The center provides exhibits on the alpine tundra ecosystem, a gift shop, restrooms, and ranger programs — all at an elevation where breathing requires a bit more conscious effort than usual.

The center is open when Trail Ridge Road is open — typically late May through mid-October, weather permitting. The exact hours and dates vary by year; check nps.gov/romo before planning a visit.

The Alpine Ridge Trail

A short tundra walk from the Alpine Visitor Center — the Alpine Ridge Trail — takes visitors above 12,000 feet on a 0.6-mile round trip that provides the highest easily accessible viewpoint in RMNP. The views from the top of the ridge encompass both the Never Summer Mountains to the west and the Never Summer Range ridge to the north.

The tundra ecosystem along this trail is extraordinarily fragile — do not step off the marked trail surface. Footprints on tundra can persist for decades due to the extremely slow recovery of tundra plants in the harsh alpine environment.

Planning Your Visit

The Alpine Visitor Center is 30 to 45 minutes from Grand Lake via Trail Ridge Road. Allow a full morning for a Grand Lake-to-Alpine Visitor Center round trip with stops. Dress for temperatures 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Grand Lake — wind at the summit is significant.

Timed entry permits are NOT required for the Grand Lake approach to Trail Ridge Road. Drive directly from Grand Lake's west entrance to the summit without needing a permit reservation.
