Rocky Mountain National Park
The most significant natural attraction near Grand Lake is Rocky Mountain National Park, accessible from the west (Grand Lake) entrance in five minutes. The west-side trails — Colorado River Trail, East Inlet Trail, Tonahutu Creek — are consistently less crowded than their east-side counterparts. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved highway in the US, is accessible from the Grand Lake side.
The park is open year-round. Summer brings hiking and wildlife viewing; winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the unplowed roads inside the park. Entry requires either a fee or an America the Beautiful Pass.
Water Activities on Grand Lake and Shadow Mountain Lake
Grand Lake — Colorado's largest natural lake — and adjacent Shadow Mountain Lake are the summer playground for Grand Lake visitors. Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, and fishing are all available from the Grand Lake Marina, which rents equipment and offers guided trips. Boat ramps are located at multiple access points around both lakes.
The morning calm on Grand Lake before the afternoon wind picks up is ideal for kayaking. The lake is surrounded by forest and mountains with no development on most of its shoreline — a rare combination of accessibility and wildness.
Snowmobiling — Colorado's Best
Grand Lake is Colorado's Snowmobiling Capital, with over 300 miles of trails connecting to Granby, Fraser, and the broader Grand County trail network. Rentals and guided tours are available in town. The terrain suits beginners through advanced riders, with groomed meadow cruising and high-country loops both accessible from Grand Lake.
The snowmobile season typically runs December through March, with January and February offering the most reliable snow conditions. The trails are maintained by the Grand Lake Snowmobile Club and are generally well-marked.
Hiking Near Grand Lake
Dozens of hiking trails begin within 10 minutes of Grand Lake — both inside Rocky Mountain National Park and in the surrounding Arapaho National Recreation Area. Adams Falls is a short, family-friendly hike to a dramatic waterfall. The East Inlet and North Inlet trails offer longer routes into the RMNP backcountry. The Colorado River Trail is flat and ideal for wildlife watching.
Outside the park, trails around Lake Granby and the Arapaho National Forest provide additional options without requiring a park entry fee. The trail system connects to hundreds of miles of maintained routes across Grand County.
Grand Lake Village
Grand Lake Village is a historic boardwalk lined with locally owned restaurants, galleries, ice cream shops, and outfitters. The village sits right on the lake shore with views of the Divide. Unlike many Colorado mountain towns, Grand Lake has maintained its independent character — no big chains, no casino, just a genuine small mountain community.
Summer evenings on the boardwalk, with the lake reflecting the last light and the mountains lit gold, are one of the defining experiences of a Grand Lake trip. The village also hosts community events through the season including the Fourth of July parade and the Barktoberfest fall festival.
Grand Lake Golf Course
Grand Lake Golf Course is one of the highest-elevation courses in the United States, set against the backdrop of the Continental Divide. The course offers dramatic mountain views on every hole, and the cooler temperatures at altitude make summer rounds genuinely comfortable even in July and August. It is a standout round for golfers who want something they cannot find at a sea-level course.
The course is a short drive from the cabin properties and is a natural add-on to a Grand Lake stay for groups with golfers. Tee times can be reserved in advance — summer weekends book up, so plan ahead if golf is part of your itinerary.
Hot Sulphur Springs
Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa is located about 20 minutes south of Grand Lake on US-40. The natural hot springs have been a destination since the late 1800s, and the resort offers a collection of outdoor pools at varying temperatures fed by the natural mineral springs. It is an excellent half-day excursion — soak in the springs, then return to the cabin's private hot tub for the evening.
