Moose on the Colorado River
The upper Colorado River valley inside Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most reliable moose viewing areas in Colorado. The Colorado River Trail from the west side of RMNP runs directly through the willow meadows where moose feed year-round. Early morning — within an hour of sunrise — is the best viewing window.
Colorado moose are the largest land animals in the state and can weigh over 1,000 pounds. Cows with calves are present in summer; bulls grow and shed large antlers annually. Always stay at least 75 feet from moose — they can be unpredictable and are faster than they appear.
Elk Rut and Year-Round Elk Viewing
Elk are the signature large mammal of RMNP and Grand County. During the September and October rut, bull elk bugle at dawn and dusk — one of the most dramatic natural sounds in North America. Open meadows near the RMNP west entrance and along the Colorado River corridor are reliable viewing spots.
Elk are present year-round near Grand Lake. Winter often brings elk to lower elevations near the valley floor where they can access forage. The herds that move through Grand County can number in the hundreds during migration periods.
Bighorn Sheep and Other Wildlife
Bighorn sheep are most commonly seen along Trail Ridge Road at higher elevations inside RMNP. They are often spotted on rocky cliff faces or crossing the road near the Alpine Visitor Center. Mule deer are abundant throughout the Grand Lake area and regularly appear near the cabins at dusk.
Black bears are present in the Grand Lake area from spring through fall. They are generally not dangerous but should be treated with respect — secure food properly and do not feed wildlife. The cabin hosts can advise on current bear activity in the area.
